During my travel nurse assignment in Columbus, Ohio, I stayed in the Short North area where I was able to enjoy a few local events on the popular High Street. Fortunately, this area was surrounded by many beautiful murals, sculptures, and architecture. Additionally, I visited several great restaurants where I really enjoyed the food.
Now let’s tRavel iN style!
High Street (Short North Art District)
High Street was located on the main strip in the Short North Art District area where multiple boutique shops, restaurants, and events were in downtown Columbus. This strip was also extremely popular during the college football season for Ohio State University fans. There was never a dull moment on this strip!
Murals & Sculptures on High Street
While shopping or just strolling along the main strip of High Street, I was able to enjoy the beautiful murals, sculptures, and architecture. The colors of the murals were bold and vibrant, and the metal sculpture that appeared to come out of the ground was bizarre, but fascinating at the same time.
Restaurants
drunch Eatery + Bar was the first restaurant I visited when I arrived in Columbus. During my first visit, I ordered the popular Chicken & Waffles! During another visit, I ordered the Veggie Breakfast Quesadilla, which was surprisingly flavorful! Each meal was paired with a refreshing cocktail.
Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurants is one of my favorite restaurants. I visited Cooper’s Hawk located in the Easton Town Center before leaving Columbus. Not only was the ambiance and food great, but the wine was top notch! I ordered the delicious, savory Gnocchi with Roasted Butternut Squash, with wild mushrooms, sweet onion cream, spinach, feta, and crispy onions. For dessert, I had the Cooper’s Hawk Chocolate Cake with vanilla ice cream. I usually pair my meals with the Scarletto sparkling wine, but I tried the Blood Orange Pineapple Bubbly Sangria instead, which was nice, clean, and sweet/fruity.
Butcher & Rose restaurant had an elegant and classy vibe. Not shown, but I ordered the Willow Bend Lamb Chops, which were so flavorful and tender. I paired my meal with the Maverick Martini, which was a superb choice! The martini was made with vodka, passoa, champagne, and passion fruit foam on top.
The Lox was a bagel-sandwich eatery that was literally a three minute walk from where I stayed and located on High Street. I ordered the Cauliflower Melt, on a sesame seed bagel and paired it with a warm apple cider-brandy drink for the Fall season. The drink was warm and satisfying, especially during the cold weather.
Chris Cooks was a black-owned, southern cuisine restaurant, with delivery service for the days when I did not feel like going out, but wanted food that reminded me of my family’s home cooking. I ordered a five-piece Wingding meal with two small sides: homemade yams and collard greens. Let me tell you, everything melted in my mouth and was seasoned to perfection!
Modern Southern Table was another black-owned, southern cuisine restaurant, with delivery service. I ordered the catfish, which really hit the spot! It was seasoned so nicely that whatever side I paired it with, complimented it quite well (e.g., baked mac & cheese, collard greens, potato wedges, cornbread, etc.). The signature, homemade Comeback Sauce was amazing. The sauce reminded me of Zaxby’s sauce, but 10 times better!
