During my travel nurse assignment in Newark, New Jersey, I was extremely grateful that there were a variety of restaurants located within walking distance of my residence. It was kind of a blessing and a curse being surrounded by so many places to eat, lol. Out of all the restaurants within close proximity to my residence, these were my top favorite ones to visit or order takeout.
Now let’s tRavel iN style!
1. Cornbread
Cornbread was a modern, soul food restaurant that did not disappoint. I must admit, I was a little skeptical about ordering soul food in the north, but everything was seasoned to southern perfection! I ordered the 3-piece fried chicken meal that included two sides (collard greens and baked mac & cheese) and cornbread. I got a side of peach cobbler for dessert. I also ordered a mixture of their house-made, signature drinks Uptown and Southern Twang😋.
2. Brick City Vegan
I often visited this surprisingly, delicious vegan spot in downtown Newark. This place really made me think about becoming vegan. I visited this restaurant numerous times, and I mainly ordered off of the burger menu. My favorite plant-based burgers were the Sweet Potato and California burgers. As far as the sides, I usually got a side-salad or plantains.
3. Krauszer’s
Krauszer’s was a grocery store/deli/grill. This was a true neighborhood “convenient” store that met all needs, e.g., groceries, toiletries, paper goods, etc. I would place a food order using a touchscreen kiosk, and it will print out a receipt with my order number. The cashier would yell out the order number for me to pick up my food and pay for all of the items at once.
4. Tops Diner
Tops Diner was the most recommended restaurant by my colleagues. I mostly ordered pick-up or delivery by Uber Eats. I was never disappointed with their meals or service. They had a variety of food and drink choices on the menu, e.g. seafood, pasta, steak, jambalaya, deli sandwiches, chicken, meatloaf, ribs, desserts, milkshakes, and so much more! During my last week in Newark, I could not leave without ordering a meal from Tops, which was the Famous Meatloaf meal that included mushrooms and gravy, mashed potato, mixed veggies, and two slices of ciabatta bread.
Which restaurant(s) do you think you would enjoy in Newark, NJ.?! Let me know in the comments! 😋
