The Hoosier State

The travel nurse assignment in Indianapolis, Indiana had two different NICUs where nurses often floated. There was a Level-III NICU in the Riley Maternity Tower (RMT) building for newborn and premature patients, and a Level-IV NICU in the Simon Family Tower (SFT) building for newborn or transfer patients with excessive, complicated diagnoses. Both buildings were a part of Indiana University (IU) Health, the largest healthcare system in the state of Indiana.

All of my colleagues were really nice and helpful on each unit. However, my favorite unit was the Level-IV NICU at SFT because of the acuity and different patient diagnoses that I attended to.

If you are considering a travel assignment in Indianapolis, IN, make sure to check out the resources provided below:

  • Hospital: IU Health, Level-III (RMT) & Level-IV (SFT) NICU

  • Hospital Parking: Initially free; however, IU health no longer pays for contractor parking. Currently costs $110 per renewal.
  • Assignments: RMT 1: 2-3 ratio, mostly feeder, grower infants. SFT 1:2 ratio, occasionally 3 patients (very rare), but mostly high acuity.
  • Floating: NICU to NICU or other IU Health NICUs about 30 mins away from the main hospital. Rarely float to other units in the hospital, but the charge nurse would text in a timely manner before start of shifts.

In conclusion, the travel assignment in Indianapolis, IN was quite nice, and I enjoyed floating from NICU to NICU and not to PICU or CVICU. I even extended my contract for another 3 months. I cannot wait to tell you about the next travel assignment…so stay tuned!
