During my travel nurse assignment in Washington D.C. (D.C.), I got the opportunity to work in one of the best NICUs in the nation, and explore the nation’s capital, as well. I was able to visit some of the most iconic memorials, monuments, and museums with my friends and family when they visited. Here are some of the most exciting activities that I really enjoyed…

Now let’s tRavel iN style!

Memorials/Monuments/Museums

Let’s start off with the must-see monuments in D.C. The first historical monument we visited was the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, located in West Potomac Park. The MLK Memorial was the first to be built within the National Mall, to honor an African American and commensurate his legacy.

Afterwards, we visited the Korean War Memorial, while on the way to the Lincoln Memorial.

The Lincoln Memorial, was built to honor the late President Abraham Lincoln. Ironically, this was where MLK gave voice to his famous I Have A Dream speech. There were no costs to visit any of these historical sites.

Next, we walked to the Washington Monument, which was built in honor of the late President George Washington. When it was built, it stood as the tallest building in the world at 555 feet, 5-1/8 inches!

The next day, we took a Lyft to the Capitol. I was able to get some great photo-shots before it began pouring down rain on us!

After the downpour of rain, we walked to the White House. It was about a thirty minute walk, but at least we were able to get in a little exercise! 😮‍💨

The following day, we parked at the Ronald Reagan Building and walked to the National Museum of African American History and Culture, which was about a ten minute walk. This African American museum is one of the largest in the world! Two of my favorite moments while visiting were seeing my college alma mater, FAMU, featured in the museum and the display dedicated to nursing and the impact it has made in American History. The museum was free to enter, but accepted donations for upkeep.

Food

For dinner, we took a Lyft to the Yardbird Table & Bar. The food was to die for! We ordered the shrimp & grits, and the sweet tea braised short rib. Let me tell you, the food was so divine that we completely cleaned our plates! To satisfy our sweet tooth, we ordered the strawberry peach cobbler. It was a little too sweet for my taste, but a tasty dessert.

Another great place to dine was at Creole on 14th. I am a Florida girl who loves southern cuisine, such as their oxtails and baked mac & cheese. Everything was soooo delicious and flavorful!

For dessert, we went to The Peach Cobbler Factory. They had so many flavors of cobbler to choose from, such as blueberry, strawberry, or good ole fashion peach cobbler, which I got 😋!

Other Fun Activities

During my stay in D.C., I partook in many other fun activities with my friends and family, such as cruising the Potomac River on a black women-owned yacht charter called the Mahogany Yacht Charters. Additionally, there was shopping, dining, and other fun events at the National Harbor in Oxon Hill, MD.

We were even able to attend a Major League Baseball game at the Nationals Park to watch the Washington Nationals…play ball! Lastly, we visited The Whaft DC, where there were plenty more shopping, dining, and fun things to do, such as renting an electric boat at GoBoats to sail the Washington Channel while viewing the city!

Have you ever visited D.C.?! Let me know in the comments! 😃🏛️
